A Paramedic’s Reality

Every eight seconds a child is left in a car. Thirty-six children on average die every year due to in-car hyperthermia. In 2010 alone there were 49 child-seat fatalities… and half of these were simply “forgotten” by a distracted driver. And there were over 10,000 “near misses!” What’s going on here? The answer is that those things we say can never happen to us can happen to us.

Our lives are more complicated… maybe more complicated than ever. Paramedics and first-responders are seeing this all the time as cell phones and in-car distractions cause thousands of accidents daily. And tragically, with child hyperthermia, the outcome is too often determined before the paramedics arrive on scene. It’s one of the saddest calls that paramedics can respond to. Despite all of their skills and medical knowledge, they can’t save their young patient. A family is utterly devastated. All completely preventable.

The Baby in Back® child car safety system was conceived and developed by paramedics who know this tool can save lives. It’s ideally constructed to be simple to use and affordable.

A Parent’s Reality

As a parent you buy a car because it’s safe. It comes loaded with devices to warn you of every possible event. Your oil is running low. Your gas is running low. The list would take up half a page. But there’s no warning for a child left unattended while temperatures spike within minutes. While the perception may be that a few moments running into that hardware store is harmless, the reality can be tragic. No siren will ring across the parking lot. No blue light will swirl from a cash register. Don’t let your decision to “get things done” become the worst decision you ever made.

The science behind the timing of car seat deaths should shock you. Car temperatures can become lethal even on a 70° day. And as for those “quick” errands…a car’s temperature can rise 19 degrees in just 10 minutes – even on a cloudy 80° day! Internal organs begin shutting down at 104°; death occurs at 107°. And these realities are not just for small children. Children up to six years old die in heat related accidents. These are the facts. This is the reality.
